Guide
Installing Islet, setting up Choco, the optional dock, and taking it all off again.
Install
- Download Islet setup (about 19 MB).
- Open the file from your Downloads folder.
- If Windows says it protected your PC, see the Windows warning below.
- Follow the installer. It takes a few seconds, and Islet starts when it's done.
You need Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. If your PC doesn't have Microsoft Edge WebView2 yet, the installer adds it. Windows 11 already has it.
The Windows warning
Islet isn't code-signed yet, so the first time you open the installer Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”.
- Click More info.
- Click Run anyway.
The warning only means Windows doesn't know the publisher yet.
First run
Islet sits at the top of your screen as a small glass pill with Choco asleep in it.
- Hover it to open it. Move away and it closes.
- Right-click the tray icon for settings, the dashboard and Quit.
- To start it with Windows, turn on Start with Windows in its settings.
- A full-screen game or video puts Islet to sleep until you leave it.
Choco and AI keys
The first time Choco turns on, it downloads its speech models (about 68 MB). After that, “Hey Choco” and the speech-to-text run on your PC.
Without a key
Simple commands work offline: “start a focus session”, “add a task to call mum at 5”, “next song”, “how much water today”.
With a key
For questions, using your computer and remembering things about you, add a key for one of these in Islet's dashboard:
- OpenCode (Go plan)
- OpenAI
- Google Gemini
Your key stays on your PC. When Choco uses your computer, it asks you Yes or No on the island before anything risky like sending, buying or deleting. Hold Esc to stop it.
Islet Dock
An optional dock of your apps along the bottom of the screen, made of the same glass. It's a separate download.
- While it runs, it hides the Windows taskbar and takes its place.
- Push the cursor into the bottom-right corner to bring the taskbar back for the tray and clock.
- Over a maximised or full-screen window it slides away. Push the cursor to the bottom edge to bring it back.
- Click an app to open or switch to it. Right-click to keep it in the dock or take it out.
- To close it, right-click any app and choose Quit Dock. The taskbar comes back.
Taskbar stuck hidden? If the dock ever closes without quitting properly, press Ctrl Shift Esc, find Windows Explorer and choose Restart. Signing out and back in works too.
Uninstall
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find Islet (or Islet Dock) and choose Uninstall. Quit the dock first so the taskbar is back.
Questions
What goes over the internet?
Only requests that need an AI go to the service whose key you added. Lyrics come from lrclib.net. The wake word and speech-to-text stay on your PC. Islet also hides itself from screen captures and recordings.
Will it slow my PC down?
It's built with Rust and Tauri, so it stays light, and during full-screen games it uses about 0.07% CPU.
Is it free?
Yes. The only cost is the AI service you pick, and only if you want Choco's AI features.
